Michael Chandler has had one goal in mind since coaching opposite Conor McGregor on The Ultimate Fighter Season 31 — to fight “The Notorious” inside the Octagon. The long-awaited clash was originally set for UFC 303 on June 29, 2024, but was scrapped after McGregor withdrew due to a toe injury.

Now, “Iron” Mike has his sights set on a new venue for their long-teased showdown: the rumored UFC White House card.
The Wild Ride of Conor McGregor
While Chandler has stayed ready, McGregor has been living a whirlwind of a life. From starring in Road House to making headlines for altercations, viral weight-lifting routines, and even an alleged affair, McGregor is once again dominating the news cycle — even outside of the cage.
Recently, he made headlines in Ireland by floating the idea of running for president. And yet, despite the distractions, McGregor claims he’s not done fighting.
Chandler’s Relentless Pursuit
Michael Chandler has endured a rough stretch, going 2-5 since joining the UFC. He’s currently on a three-fight skid, with many critics suggesting it may be time to hang up the gloves.
But Chandler isn’t interested in retirement. A lifelong competitor and former three-time Bellator Lightweight Champion, he’s chasing one last defining moment — and a win over McGregor could be exactly that.
While UFC-only fans may focus on his recent record, long-time MMA followers know Chandler’s resume is far more impressive than the numbers suggest. A win over one of the sport’s biggest stars would cement his legacy in a different way.
Signs of Hope
McGregor has officially re-entered the UFC’s anti-doping testing pool — a requirement for any fighter planning to return to competition. While many fans doubted his latest comeback claims, the UFC’s anti-doping website confirms that McGregor has completed a test this year.
This would mark his first fight since suffering a broken leg against Dustin Poirier in July 2021. Despite numerous public promises to return, this latest move could finally signal real intent.”Excited with President Trump announcing a UFC fight event at the White House,” McGregor wrote on July 4. “I would be honoured! Count me in!”
While Chandler waits, McGregor still has options.
Some speculate that a third fight with Nate Diaz could steal the spotlight. Former UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping believes a matchup between Diaz and reigning BMF champion Max Holloway would be fireworks — but sees an even better opportunity:
“Wouldn’t you rather see Nate Diaz versus Conor McGregor at the White House?” Bisping said. “That’s the fight I’d rather see, if I’m honest.”
McGregor and Diaz are 1–1 in their iconic rivalry, with Diaz handing McGregor his first UFC loss in 2016 and McGregor edging out a decision in their rematch. A trilogy bout at a White House event would be the stuff of legend.
What’s Next?
Whether it’s Chandler, Diaz, or someone else entirely, McGregor’s return appears to finally be gaining momentum. For Chandler, the clock is ticking. He needs a win — or the McGregor payday — to give closure to a UFC run that’s delivered excitement, if not always results.
One thing is clear: Chandler isn’t letting go of this dream. Not yet.
