Conor McGregor Declares Presidential Run, as Ex-Teammate Reflects on Khabib Loss<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conor McGregor says he\u2019s serious about\u00a0running for the highest office in Ireland\u00a0\u2014 and now he\u2019s trying to make it official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former UFC double champion\u00a0posted a petition to social media<\/a>\u00a0on Monday declaring his intent to run for president of Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McGregor\u2019s initial announcement came back in March, just days after a high-profile meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Since then, speculation around his political ambitions has only grown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as McGregor sets his sights on politics, one of his former friends and teammates, Artem Lobov, is pulling back the curtain on the mindset McGregor had heading into one of the most pivotal moments of his fighting career \u2014 his 2018 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Lobov, McGregor simply wasn\u2019t taking the fight seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know that fight bothers Conor because he didn\u2019t train at all for that fight,\u201d Lobov told Ariel Helwani. \u201cTwice a week he was training for Khabib. I tried to get him to [Las Vegas] and said \u2018We have to do this,\u2019 and he told me to f–k off. He just didn\u2019t want to do it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was in the wrong mindset, the party mindset,\u201d Lobov added. \u201cTraining twice a week and that\u2019s it. So when I saw the fight, I was like \u2018Oh my god, if only you trained four times a week, you probably would\u2019ve beaten him. Imagine him in a full camp. The Conor that fought Eddie Alvarez, imagine that Conor fighting Khabib. That\u2019s what I want to see.\u201d

McGregor made history in 2016 by becoming the first UFC fighter to hold titles in two weight divisions simultaneously. But after reaching that pinnacle, he stepped away from MMA to pursue a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr.,\u00a0earning over $100 million<\/a>\u00a0in the process. That payday, many believe, shifted McGregor\u2019s priorities away from competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lobov \u2014 who is currently involved in a\u00a0lawsuit against McGregor\u00a0over profits from the Proper No. Twelve whiskey brand \u2014 claims that despite the tension between them, he still hopes to see McGregor back in top form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would love to see him come back,\u201d Lobov said. \u201cBecause I feel that if he was at 100 percent, we would be able to bring Khabib back as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Lobov is scheduled to\u00a0come out of retirement to fight Zubaira\u00a0Tukhugov at a PFL event in October. His legal battle with McGregor over Proper 12 is still awaiting a trial date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
